Sodium Bicarbonate Indications
- Metabolic acidosis secondary to OD (ASA, TCA)
- Cardiac arrest with known or suspected hyperkalemia (dialysis pt)
Sodium Bicarbonate contraindications
Respiratory acidosis
Sodium Bicarbonate side effects/adverse reactions
None in emergency setting
Sodium Bicarbonate Dose
Adult & Pedi:
1mEq/kg (initial) iv io
Sodium Bicarbonate precautions
Causes metabolic alkalosis when administered in large quantities
Sodium Bicarbonate Drug Interactions
- Deactivates catecholamines and vasopressors
- Forms PPT with CaCl2 in IV tubing
