Albuterol Sulfate (Proventil HFA, ProAir HFA) Flashcards
Albuterol Classification
Sympathomimetic/Sympathetic agonist (B2 selective)
Albuterol Mechanism
B2 agonist -> promotes sympathetic stimulation of bronchial SMC, reducing interaction between actin and myosin causing SM relaxation -> bronchodilation
Albuterol Pharmacokinetics
Onset: 5-15m
Peak Effects: 1-1.5h
Duration: 3-6h
Half Life: <3h
Albuterol Indications
- Reversible bronchospasm associated with COPD and asthma
- Wheezing associated with allergic reaction/anaphylaxis
Albuterol Contraindications
- Symptomatic tachycardia
- Hypersensitivity
Albuterol Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Anxiety, HA, palpitations, sweating, dizziness, HTN, nervousness, tremor, CP, N/V, dysrhythmias
Albuterol Dose
Adult & Pedi:
small volume nebulizer: 2.5mg in 2.5cc NS, nebulized with O2 at 8lpm
Albuterol Precautions
- May worsen cardiac asthma and precipitate dysrhythmias
- Consider 12-lead EKG in pts with associated CP
Albuterol Drug Interactions
- Side effects may increase with other sympathetic agonists
- Beta blockers may blunt effects of this drug
- MAOI and TCA may potentiate CV effects
