Platelet aggregation inhibitor/Salicylate/Anti-inflammatory

ASA Mechanism
A
- Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking the formation of thromboxane A2 -> Thromboxane A2 causes platelet aggregation and arterial constriction
- COX inhibitor -> inhibits prostaglandin synthesis and decreases spread of inflammation

A
CP suggestive of AMI/ACS

ASA Contraindications
A
- Active GI bleeding
- Hypersensitivity

ASA Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
A
GI bleeding, wheezing, N/V, heartburn, prolonged bleeding

A
Adult:
160-325mg PO; 81mg baby aspirin tablets preferred as they can be chewed or swallowed
Pedi:
Not recommended

A
Can Cause GI upset

A
- Enhanced side effects with other anti-inflammatory agents
- Decreased absorption with concurrent antacid administration
