Ipratropium Classification
Anticholinergic/Parasympatholytic
Ipratropium Mechanism
Muscarinic AchR antagonist -> inhibits parasympathetic stimulation in bronchial SMC, submucosal glands, and goblet cells -> dries respiratory tract and allows for bronchdilation
Ipratropium Pharmacokinetics
Onset: Varies
Peak Effects: 1.5-2h
Duration: 4-6h
Half Life: 1.5-2h
Ipratropium Indications
- Respiratory distress and wheezing associated with bronchial asthma
- Reversible bronchospasm associated with COPD
Ipratropium Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Hypersensitivity to atropine
Ipratropium Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Anxiety, HA, palpitations, dizziness, nervousness, rash, dry mouth, N/V
Ipratropium Dose
Adult & Pedi:
small volume nebulizer with 500mcg
Ipratropium Precautions
Typically administered with a Beta agonist
