Promethazine Classification
Antiemetic/Anticholinergic
Promethazine Mechanism
H1 (Histamine) R and muscarinic ACh antagonist ->inhibits communication from the chemoreceptor trigger zone (which recognizes emetic toxins) to the vomiting center of the brain

Onset: 5m IV, 20m IM
Peak: varies
Duration: 4-6h
Half Life: 10-14h

Hypersensitivity
Promethazine Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, sedation, blurred vision, tachycardia, bradycardia, dizziness
Promethazine Dose
Adult:
12.5-25mg IV IM
Pedi:
0.5mg/kg
Promethazine Precautions
May cause CNS depression or dystonia
Promethazine Drug Interactions
- Potentiates CNS depressant effect of narcotics, sedatives/hypnotics, and EtOH
- Increased incidence of dystonia with concurrnet use of MAOI
