Second Line of Defence - Introduction Flashcards
Is Second Line of Defence specific or non-specific?
Non-specific
State some characteristics of Second Line of Defense
- Rapid - so pathogen has no time to establish
- Present in all animals
- No immunological memory
- Same response
What are White Blood Cells?
Leukocytes - are cells of immune system that help fight infection/disease
What receptors do WBCs have?
Toll-like receptors (TLRs)
What is purpose of TLRs?
Recognise Microbial/pathogenic molecules called Pathogen-Assosciated molecular Patterns (PAMPs)
What are charactristics of PAMPs?
Common to lots of pathogens allowing leukocytes to identify various pathogens
How do TLRs and PAMPs interact?
They bind together due to their complementary shape
What are antigens?
Substances that trigger immune responses
State important cells and molecules of Second Line of Defence
5 of them
- Phagocytes
- Mast Cells
- Complement proteins
- Cytokines
- Natural Killer Cells
