First Line of Defence - Plants Flashcards
State the Physical barriers that plants have
There are 5
- Thick Waxy cuticle
- Bark
- Vertically hanging leaves
- Hairs and thorns
- Thickened cell wall
State purpose of Thick Waxy Cuticle and Bark
Thick layer of dead cells that is waterproof so droplet containing pathogens run off. Also difficult to get through dead cell layer.
State purpose of vertically hanging leaves
Pathogens run off surface quickly (don’t accumulate)
State purpose of Hairs and thorns
Deters damage to other barriers from animals feeding/moving past
S
State purpose of Thickened cell wall
Creates a larger distance that pathogens need to cross. The cell wall has no nutrients.
State chemical barriers in Plants
State 3 out of 5 at least
- Defensins
- Phytoalexins
- Caffeine
- Tannins
- Highly reactive oxygen molecules
State purpose of Defensins, Phtoalexins, Tannins and Caffeine?
Toxic to pathogens
State purpose of Highly Reactive Oxygen Molecules and what is their other name?
Free Radicals - React with pathogenic DNA, destroying it
State Microbiological barriers in plants
There are none
