Anaerobic Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is another name for Anaerobic Respiration?
Fermentation
What two organisms have we studied anaerobic cellular respiration on?
Animals and yeast
What does anaerobic respiration mean?
Anaerobic respiration is the cellular respiration without oxygen
What processes are stopped in anaerobic respiration?
When no O2 is present, electron transport chain stops. NADH and FADH2 cannot unload so no NAD+ and FAD to catalyse Krebs. Therefore Krebs cycle also stops.
What process still works in Anaerobic Cellular respiration?
Glycolysis
How much ATP is produced in anaerobic respiration?
2 ATPs
Explain the process of anaerobic respiration in animals
Pyruvate is converted into lactic acid. Conversion of pyruvate to lactic acid allows NADH to drop off e- and H+ to produce NAD+ which can keep glycolysis going.
What happens to lactic acid later on?
Lactic Acid is removed when oxygen return back to cells
Explain first step of anaerobic respiration in yeast
Pyruvate is converted to Acetyldehyde, producing CO2
State adavantage of CO2 being produced
Can be used in baking industry to make bread rise
Explain second stage of anaerobic respiration in yeast?
Acetyldehyde is converted to Ethanol. This conversion allows NADH to drop off e- and H+ to form NAD+, which keeps glycolysis going.
State advantage of ethanol being produced
Can be used in the brewing industry to make alcohol
