Gene Expression Flashcards
What characteristic do all cells and organisms possess in terms of gene expression?
Highly controlled
In eukaryotic cells when can gene expression be regulated?
During transcription or RNA processing
Both occur in nucleus
In prokaryotic cells when can gene expression be regulated?
During transcription only
What are the 3 types of genes?
- Constitutive genes
- Regulatory gene
- Structural genes
What are constitutive genes?
Genes that are always switched on and transcribed continually
What are regulatory genes?
Genes that code for transcription factors. These are proteins that help control gene expression during transcription phase to eithr induce or repress expressionof specific genes.
What are structural genes?
Genes that code for proteins and RNA’s that create structural proteins, enzymes, etc.
What additional section do genes in prokaryotic cells usually possess to help regulate gene expression?
Operator region
Found after promoter region and before start triplet.
