Disease Challenges Flashcards
What are the 2 classifications of disease?
- Non-infectious (non-communicable)
- Infectious (communicable)
What are non-infectious diseases
Cannot spread from affected individuals to healthy people via environment
How might non-infectious diseases by acquired? Give examples
- Through envrionment cause disease: Chronic lung disease from poor air quality
- Degenerative diseases: Arthritis
- Nutritional diseases: Diabetes
- Cancers
What are infectious diseases?
Can be transmitted from one individual to another, and can be caused through pathogenic agents
What are some examples of infectious diseases?
- Corona virus
- Meningitis
- Any pathogenic disease
What are emerging diseases?
Disease caused by a newly identified or previously unknown agent that may have existed in oher species prior, but has become an increasing incidence in humans.
Whata re-emerging diseases?
Diseases which have reappeared or re-emerged after significant decline in incidence.
What is a pandemic?
Refers to rapid and sudden global outbreak of a disease
What is an epidemic?
Rapid and widespread occurrence of infectious disease in particular community or restricted geographic area at a particular time.
What is an endemic disease?
Disease that is constantly present within a population/region, but has a relatively low spread and severity
Why are pandemics more of an issue in today’s modern day?
Due to increased connectivity in regions through fast transportation technology (airplanes, etc), allowing diseases to travel regions faster and easier.
