What does passive immunity mean?
We are given antibodies to help fight disease
What are the two types of Passive Immunity?
- Natural passive immunity
- Artificial passive immunity
What does Natural Passive Immunity refer to?
Antibodies that are aquired from the mother
What are the two ways a person can receive antibodies from their mother?
- Through the placenta
- Through breastfeeding
What does artifical passive immunity refer to?
Antibodies are given to person via injection
What is the purpose of babies receiving antibodies from the mother
These antibodies help fight pathogens which the baby encounters in the first few months of it’s life
What is the purpose or situation where injecting antibodies is needed?
Useful for helping treat patients of infection by pathogen or venomous bite/sting causing the person’s death to be likely. Time is very short and death is fairly iminent.
How are antivenoms for snakes produced?
- Using horses
- Horse is injected with small amount of snake venom
- Horse produces antibodies against venome
- These antibodies are extracted and given to people
