What is an alternate name for phase 4?
Connected up relatedness or secondary intersubjectivity
At what age does this phase occur?
9-10 months
When does pointing start?
Around 9 months, infant can follow other’s pointing gestures
How does pointing behaviour change between 9 and 14 months?
Infants being to point either arm extended, index finger separate from others - hard to detect the first time
Why is pointing important?
Infants can share specific point of interest and parent can interact with this
When does gaze following begin?
Early in infancy, infants begin to follow other peoples line of regard
What factors affect an infants ability to gaze follow?
Whether a persons head is moving or just their eyes and how far away the object is
What is gaze following a good predictor of ?
Onset of the posting gesture which can predict vocab development
What is an example of reciprocal play?
Turn taking in games e.g. peek a boo
What is an example of following suggestions?
Wants to give something to dad, dad suggests give to grandma, follows suggestion and gives it to her
What is an example of sharing interests?
Points to a monkey, makes sound, share interest and they both make the sound
What is an evaluation of phase 4?
- Infants have a considerable physical mastery of environment
- Gain a solid foundation for a fuller understanding and cooperation with others
