CA - Education Flashcards
What are fixed factors affecting cognitive abilities?
Genomes
What are accidental factors affecting cognition?
Head injuries
What are some factors that are under our control?
Diet, physical exercise, healthy lifestyle and perhaps education too
How can education increase your IQ?
One more year of schooling = 1-5 additional IQ points
What is the correlation between education and dementia?
Higher educational attainment is associated with lower dementia rates
In a meta analysis on education what data was used?
25 years of data over 9 waves collected in Aichi, Japan. 1892 people aged 40-80 at the baselines
What research questions were asked?
Does education impact baseline levels? Does education impact declines? Does the type of cognitive abilities matter?
What were the results of the study?
That gf (0.25 SD) declines much factor than gc (0.50 SD)
What were both gc and gf slopes affected by?
- Baseline age (the younger, the milder the slope)
- The number of measurements taken (the more tests, the better the cognitive performance, because the participants learn how to perform the task)
What is the problem with the study?
- Cognitive decline -> dementia
- Dementia is less likely to occur in more educated people
- Effect of education on cognitive decline = 0
What factors can increase the chance of developing dementia’s by causing brain damage?
Obesity, air pollution and bad lifestyle - these factors are all linked to education and socio-economic status.
