What are mental health difficulties often centred around?
Deficits or unusual patterns of emotional expressiveness, understanding and or regulation - these develop across the lifespan
If developmental milestones of emotional competence are not successfully, what is there a risk of?
Risk for psychopathology at the time and later in life. Also to know when to intervene.
What basic emotions are observed at birth to 6 months?
Startle, disgust, distress, happiness, anger and sadness
What should infants be aware of by 6 months?
Take interest in other infants. Pouting may be observed, reflecting an internal self-regulating process
What emotions should be shown at 7 months?
Show a genuine fear of strangers, separation anxiety is common and attachment relationships are strongly developing.
What do infants display between 6-12 months?
Show a clear interests in peers and reflect each other’s emotional expressions
How do children act by 12 months?
Social referencing appears i.e. using another emotional expression as sources of information
What emotions are observed at 1-2 years?
Complex emotions - shame, pride - emerging out of child’s developing sense of self. Social emotion e.g. empathy is first seen. Mainly engage in parallel play and an understanding of turn-taking emerges. Social interaction increase in length and complexity and involve use of language
What emotions become apparent at 2-3 years old?
Envy, guilt and embarrassment
What do infants do when they turn 3+?
Begin to engage in cooperative play
