What is phase 2?
Core relatedness or primary subjectivity - 2 months
What is phase 2 a period of?
Purely social and emotionally intimate one to one engagements
What change do parents claim to see in phase 2?
Infants have become ‘really human’ or that they have recognised a person in their infant
What can infants do by 6-8 weeks?
Hold eye contact, vocalise, smile and show pre speech (mouth openings)
What is still face?
Infants expect their social partners to be actively engaged and when they withdraw from this, the infant becomes very confused and withdraws
What happened in the double video experiment?
Infants are sensitive to the temporal contingency of maternal response, after time, infant withdrew in non-contingent condition
What is mirroring?
Mother’s imitate / match infants behaviour. Response is attuned to the form, intensity and affective quality of infant behaviour.
What is marking?
Mother does not mirror infant behaviour. Affective quality and intensity of response is well-attuned and singles out an infant behaviour
What are negative response in terms of maternal response?
Mis-attuned response e.g. overshoots intensity of infant behaviour. Negating response e.g rejecting or mocking
What do mirroring and positive marking promote?
The development of an infants social behaviour
What does positive marking have a generalised positive effect on?
Infant behaviour, not specific to social expressiveness
What does maternal mirroring have a specific effect on?
Infant social behaviour and it is its strongest promotor
