PBD - Plasticity Flashcards
What can experience modify?
Genes put in place and the map of connections of the visual system. Brain is shaped by the interaction of genes / experience.
What is plasticity?
The brains ability to modify or reorganise. In short the brain is not a fixed structure as it can learn.
What are some negatives of plasticity?
Forgetfulness, aging or injury, illness.
What does no stimulation of the eye lead to?
No function = no elimination
What occurs if there is no ocular dominance?
Normal distribution of ODC as both eyes have brain resources
What occurs if you cover one eye?
Abnormal distribution of ODC as one eye has took all the brain resource.
What do critical periods do?
They put a timer on brain plasticity. During infancy, the brain plasticity is much higher than during adulthood.
What gene was found in a large study of incarcerated people?
MAOA gene - imply in the regulation of impulse and manifestation violent behaviour
How does the MAOA genotype affect people?
Found to structurally affect the brain.
When is MAOA activated?
When being mistreated as a child.
What is an evaluation of the plasticity in the brain?
The brain is an adaptive organ and its network is influence by both genes and experience. We now know that this phenomenon is going throwing life but some aspects of brain structure crystallises during infancy.
