Cognitive Ageing - Structure of Human Cognition Flashcards
What does fluid skills refer to?
To the core cognitive mechanisms such as working memory, processing speed and fluid intelligence.
What is questionable about fluid skills?
Malleability to training - skills decline fast with age
What are crystallised skills?
Acquired in social environment such as numeracy, verbal ability and knowledge of facts. They are relatively easy to acquire.
Do crystallised skills decline with age?
Yes, but not as much as gf skills.
Are gf and gc categories distinct?
Yes e.g. they tap into different skills and exhibit different behaviours i.e. malleability and ageing-associated declines. However they are positively correlated,
What is the g factor?
General intelligence is thus a common construct across numerous cognitive skills
