PACD - Parental conflict Flashcards
What is the spill over hypothesis?
The stress of IPV carries over into the parent-child relationship and affects their ability to parent their child
Who did Gustafson follow?
705 low income mothers and children from age 2 months to 4.5 years
What did Gustaffson find?
Maternal sensitivity carried the effect of IPV (intimate partner violence), low sensitive parenting fully explained the association between IPV and worse child effortful control and not having very good effortful control is linked to externalising problems and attention and academic achievements.
Who did Manning follow?
201 high risk mothers and their 2 year olds annually for 3 years
What did Manning et al find?
Maternal sensitivity buffered the detrimental effects of IPV, IPV was associated with signifiant increases in externalising behaviour at low but not hight levels of maternal sensitivity and IPV predicted decreases in children’s prosocial behaviour at low but not high levels of sensitive parenting.
What percentage of couples divorcing had at least one child under 16?
48%
What are the adverse effects of divorce?
Secure based of the family is broken, conflict between spouses, uncertainity for future, effects on family income, possible relocation and possible loss of contact with one parent and related kin
In a longitudinal study by Hetherington, what was found 6 years affect divorce with children whose mothers remained divorced?
Daughter showed similar adjustment to daughters of non-divorced mothers and sons showed higher externalising and internalising problems, and lower social competence than boys without divorced mothers
In a longitudinal study by Hetherington, what was found 6 years affect divorce with children whose mothers who remarried in the 2 years before the follow up?
Daughters and sons showed higher externalising problems
In a longitudinal study by Hetherington, what was found 6 years affect divorce with children whose mothers remarried prior to 2 years before the follow up?
Daughters showed higher externalising and internalising problems whereas sons were no different.
Do sons benefit from having father figure in the home?
Only when the new father figure has been brought into the home sooner than 4 years after the divorce
What were the findings of the British national child development study on divorce?
Children of divorced parents showed higher behavioural problem and lower academic achievement in maths and reading at age 11. When 7, behavioural problems and achievement were taken into account - no longer significantly different from non-divorced families
In what type of families are there the highest externalising problems?
In step families and lone parent families
What are the practical issues with involving fathers in research?
Mothers are less likely to work so may have more time for participation, not all children have fathers in their lives, fathers less likely to remain in children’s lives and some children have multiple father figures.
What are some posit effects of father involvement?
Children’s mental health as adults but only significantly so for daughters
