PBD - Brain Function in first years Flashcards
What is vision like in infants?
It is immature. At 6 months, their perception is blurry. At birth, infants do not have 3D perception.
In an experiment on face perception, what was found in infants?
Infants display the same electric pattern as adults but the timing of their response is slower. Face perception and discrimination gradually improves with age.
What is sound perception like at 30 weeks GA?
The auditory system of a foetus allows it to perceive external sounds.
What can newborns discriminate between sound wise?
Their mother voices at birth or recognise songs. Responses of the primary auditory system are slow in the first month of life.
Is the language network same in infants as adults?
The same language network is activated in infants even though they can’t process speech. New borns can extract words from continuous speech.
Do premature or term babies have more brain maturation?
Premature babies have more exposure than term babies but less brain maturation.
What is a conclusion of brain function?
- The brain is immature at birth and will continue to build connections
- This means that some functions are unavailable or not as efficient yet
- Brain maturity and experience interact in a complex way, allowing the infant to attain the skill sets of an adult
