When does a secure attachment develop?
When the caregiver responses sensitively to the baby’s signals and provides a safe base from which the infant can their environment.
How does a secure attachment help a child?
Enables development of positive beliefs about oneself and others, is the foundation for all future relationships, helps development of self-regulation and protects against future adversity.
When does an insecure attachment develop?
When a primary caregiver is insufficiently responsive and attuned to an infant’s signals
What does an insecure attachment lead to?
Negative beliefs about oneself and others, hinders the development of self-regulation, leads to difficulty making reciprocal relationships and increases risk of mental health difficulties in later life.
