What are your duties when stopped in a section due to a fault?
- Secure train - park brakes on, reverser to off/neutral, ensure marker lights put to red
- TEC or REC
- Explain circumstances to Train Control and get Reactive Track Access if required for fault finding
- Provide exact length and location of train
- PA announcement
- Do fault finding for 25 mins or 10 mins in MURL
What do you do if your train fault cannot be rectified?
- Make another TEC call
- Declare your train disabled
- Complete Driver’s Relief Authority and dictate it to Train Control, who will repeat back to you and tell you which end relief is coming from
- PA announcement telling passengers to stay on the train or risk further delay
- Take DRA, portable DTRS and red torch/flag to protection position (500m etc.)
- Once in position, call TC and tell them you are in position

Relief driver gives DRA and TA to signaller or cancels with Train Control
Both relief driver and disabled train driver submit incident reports
What are the 5 Cs of the relief procedure?
Cancel DRA
Confer with other driver to decide how to couple and where to power from
Couple electrically or non-electrically depending on nature of fault
Continuity test if emergency brake signal goes to all motors
Contact Train Controller for permission to move
When do you not need a Train Authority to perform a rescue?
During Single Line Working with no pilot on board - need written instructions instead
In ABS and ATC when you are already in the block section following behind the disabled train
If there are no comms and your train is disabled, what do you do?
- Secure train - park brakes on, reverser to off/neutral, ensure marker lights put to red
- PA announcement
- Full cab unattended
- Take red torch/flag, portable DTRS and go back 500m to protect your train in the rear UNLESS:
- unsafe to do so (overhead hanging down, trains running etc. with no reserve)
- in the MURL (all homes so no risk of other trains r1s3’ing up your back) - in which case wait for TOTS in the cab
Can the disabled train be moved if the DRA is still in effect?
No it has to be canceled first
How will a train authority be issued across all safe working systems?
Locally- Handed
Remotely- Dictated
NEVER TRANSMITTED
Do you need a Train authority if you are already in the Block section?
No you will be given verbal permission and proceed as per signal aspects
When the relief driver is handed a Train authority by signaller what must they do?
Understand and sign butt of form and keep as a receipt
What must the Train Authority state in regard to direction?
Which end of the section the disabled train will be taken
What is the drivers of a disable trains duties?
- Obtain track access if required
- Secure train and carry out Full cab unattended
- Take - DRA, Train Radio, necessary red hand signals
- Ensure red marker lights are lit on rear, emergency marker lights may be required to activate
- To protect train proceed 500m from rear or to the first fixed signal AT STOP
- Display Red hand signal
- Inform TC that train is protected
What is the authority of the relief driver to enter the section?
A train authority With instructions on how to assist disabled train
Must be Handed or Dictated
What is your authority to pass a signal protecting disabled train?
Automatic- R1S3
Home- Correct authority or Low speed caution
Pick up driver and be piloted to disabled train at max 15km/h
