Regional anaesthesia of the equine head Flashcards
What are the 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve?
opthalmic
mandibular
maxillary
What are the 5 sensory nerve blocks needed for surgeries of the periorbital surgery
supraorbital
lacrimal
Zygomatic
Infratrochlea
Retrobulbar
Where is the supraorbital nerve found
comes out of supraorbital foramen
Describe the techniques of retrobulbar nerve blocks
- needle to back of horses eye (curve needle) - can potentially move cellular debris/bacteria to back of eye
- go through supraorbital fossa
Describe the route of the maxillary branch
Maxillary branch goes into maxillary foramen and comes out of infraorbital foramen (can block at either site)
Anaesthetise maxillary cheek teeth - anaesthetise nerve at maxillary foramen (just before eye)
Anaesthetise skin and muscle - anaesthetise at infraorbital foramen => sensory anaesthetisation
Describe the anaesthetisation of the maxillary branch
Anaesthetise maxillary cheek teeth - anaesthetise nerve at maxillary foramen (just before eye) - blue
Anaesthetise skin and muscle - anaesthetise at infraorbital foramen => sensory anaesthetisation - red
Describe the route of the mandibular branch
Mandibular branch - in through mandibular foramen and out of mental foramen
Describe the anaesthetisation of the mandibular branch
Anaesthetise tooth roots/mandibular teeth - anaesthetise at mandibular foramen (inside jaw - triangulation used to find site)
