Equine wound management workshop Flashcards
What should you always check when assessing an equine wound?
if they are vaccinated against tetanus
What are the associated structures that could be affected in this wound?
Extensor tendons
Hock (if synovial sepsis, needs referring immediately)
Bones (canon)
What are some possible challenges in the healing process of this wound?
Dead space (penrose drain would be better)
Get clean as possible
Viability of flap – distal flap not got great blood supply
Tension on skin edge
Tetanus
What are the associated structures that could be affected in this wound?
Gluteal muscles
Hip joint (tuber coxae)
Bicep femoris
What are some possible challenges in the healing process of this wound?
Movement
Dead space
Tension
Distractive forces
Contamination
tetanus
What are the associated structures that could be affected in this wound?
Skin
Muscle
Radius (fractured?)
Carpal joint
What are some possible challenges in the healing process of this wound?
Contamination – foreign bodies
Large flap
Tension
Movement (lots as over carpal joint)
Lack of blood supply to flap
What are the possible structures that could be damaged with this injury (horse was impaled on a fence post)
Skin
Intercostal muscles
Ribs (fractured?)
Lungs
What is the issue here and how can it be solved?
Granulation tissue not allowing epithelialisation (proud flesh)
Granulation tissue removed to provide healthy bed for epithelialization
