Anaesthesia practical Flashcards
How should to oxygen supply be checked prior to use?
Ensure the oxygen concentrator is plugged into an electric wall socket and the lead is plugged into the back of the machine. If a cylinder is present, check that it is securely attached to the accompanying regulator and the Schrader valve/white pipe is attached, use the key to turn the cylinder on and check the oxygen level.
Switch on Oxygen Concentrator and wait for it to warm up
Once warmed up, check the anaesthetic machine flowmeter turns up to 5L/min
The Concentrator Flowmeter should already be at maximum flow left from a previous usage (i.e. 5L/min)
The Ball valve should be in closed/isolated position
How should the anaesthetic machine be checked before use?
Turn on anaesthetic machine flowmeter and check smooth operation.
Turn flowmeter down to approx. 1L/min
Check emergency O2 flush when a cylinder is connected.
Ensuring there is no gas flow first, check vaporiser is connected, has sufficient agent and the dial movement is smooth
Attach breathing system and scavenging. Check breathing system for leaks. Remember to leave the APL valve open once you have checked for leaks
In what animals is the Ayre’s T Piece used?
It is a low resistance system suitable for patients under 10Kg.
In what animals is the Lack system used ?
This system is suitable for spontaneously breathing patients over 10kg.
The minute volume (tidal volume x respiratory rate) for all the animals can be approximated to?
200ml/kg
How is flow rate (FGF) calculated?
MV(200ml/kg) X system factor
What FGFs should be used in a re-breathing/circle apparatus?
First 10-15 mins: 100ml/kg/min
* De-nitrogenation
* Flood the patient with anaesthetic agent to take over from induction agent
Maintenance: 50ml/kg/min
