What is pelvic inflammatory disease?
infection spreads from the vagina through into the cervix and then into the upper genital tract.
What does PID cause?
It causes infection and inflammation of the female pelvic organs: Uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and peritoneum
What is PID due to?
Due to an ascending infection from the endocervix
What is the most common causative organism of PID?
Chlamydia trachomatis
What are other possible causative organisms of PID?
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Mycoplasma hominis
How can PID present?
- Bilateral lower abdominal pain
- Fever
- Deep dyspareunia
- Dysuria and menstrual irregularities may occur
- Vaginal or cervical discharge
- Cervical excitation
How is the diagnosis of PID normally made?
Clinically- Pelvic examination
What might you need to exclude?
Ectopic pregnancy
What might you also do with someone presenting with PID?
Swab for Chlamydia or Gonorrhoea
What is the management of PID?
Oral ofloxacin and oral metronidazole
What is the most common complication of PID?
Chronic Pelvic pain
Which syndrome is a complication of PID?
Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome
What is Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome?
Perihepatitis
Adhesions form between the anterior liver capsule to the anterior abdominal wall or diaphragm
How is Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome diagnosed?
Laparoscopy
What is the management of Fitz-Hugh Curtis Syndrome?
Antibiotics
