Female Repro Physiology 1 Flashcards
What is the surface of the ovaries made up of?
connective tissue capsule covered with layer of simple cuboidal epithelium
What is the cortex of the ovaries made up of?
connective tissue containing ovarian follicles
What is an ovarian follicle?
one oocyte surrounded by single layer of cells
What is the medulla made up of?
connective tissue with blood vessels
What part is the cortex?
Peripheral part
What part is the medulla?
Central part
How many eggs produced per cycle?
One
What happens to the number of eggs as age increases?
Decrease
What 2 steroid hormones are produced?
Estrogen
Progesterone
What is the function of Estrogen?
develops female secondary sexual characteristics
What is the function of Progesterone?
It prepares the endometrium for implantation
What is the name of the germ cells in foetal life?
Oogonium
What do oogonium mitotically divide into?
Primordial germ cells
What do primordial follicles contain?
An immature primary oocyte
What are primary Oocytes surrounded by?
A single layer of squamous epithelium
When do primordial germ cells divide?
They only divide in foetal life
What happens to primordial germ cell division?
There is an arrest in activity
What happens once puberty starts?
Hormone secretion begins
Meiotic division resumes
What does the release of hormones do?
They convert the primordial follicles into primary and secondary follicles
What is the mature follicle called?
Graafian follicle
What does the mature follicle contain?
A secondary oocyte
What is a primordial follicle?
A primary oocyte with a single layer of squamous epithelium
What happens to the primordial follicle?
It is activated by hormones and
converted into the primary follicle
What is a primary follicle?
Oocyte (egg) surrounded by 2 layers of cells:
The zona
Cuboidal granulosa cells
What happens to the primary follicle?
The oocyte grows and increases in diameter
What is the secondary follicle composed of?
An enlarged oocyte surrounded by multiple layers of granulosa cells
What happens to the secondary follicle?
It forms a tertiary/graafian follicle
How is the tertiary/graffain follicle formed?
The secondary follicle continues to develop and between the layers of granulosa cells, there are tiny lakes of fluid which join and form an antrum(fluid filled space surround egg)
There is also an outer layer of granuloma cells
