Male Repro Physiology Flashcards
What do the temperature of the testicles have to be below and why?
The temperature of the body
To facilitate sperm production
Why is the scrotum outside the body cavity?
So the temperature of the testes are below that of the body
Where is sperm produced?
The testes
Where does sperm travel to?
The epididymis
What is the function of the epididymis?
Storage
What is the name of the bilateral tubes from the testes?
Vas deferens
What is the pathway of the vas deferens?
They pass through the inguinal region and curl around the bladder
What do the vas deferens converge to form?
The urethra
What is added to sperm in the vas deferens?
Secretion from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland (semen)
How are the seminiferous tubules formed
Tunica albuginea penetrates the structure of the testes dividing it into lobules
What do the seminiferous tubules produce?
Sperm
What happens to the seminiferous tubules?
They all merge and lead into the head of the epididymis
What are the 3 parts of the epididymis?
The head
The body
The tail
From which part of the epididymis does the vas deferens emerge?
The tail
What are the 3 cells in the seminiferous tubules?
Germ cells
Sertoli/sustentacular cells
Interstitial (leydig) cells
