Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
What is obstetric cholestasis associated with an increased risk of?
Increased risk of premature birth.
What are the main features of obstetric cholestasis?
Pruritus
Fatigue or malaise
Nausea and loss of appetite
Mild maternal jaundice (dark urine, pale stools)
Abdominal pain
Where does the pruritus more commonly affect?
Palms, soles and abdomen
What will be raised in someone presenting with obstetric cholestasis?
Bilirubin
When is delivery usually scheduled for in someone with obstetric cholestasis?
Induction of labour at 37-38 weeks
What can be given to manage the symptoms of obstetric cholestasis?
Vitamin K
Chlorphenamine
Ursodeoxycholic acid
What is the function of vitamin K in the management of obstetric cholestasis?
To reduce risk of haemorrhage
What is used to reduce the itch in someone with obstetric cholestasis?
Chlorphenamine
What is the function of ursodeoxycholic acid in someone with obstetric cholestasis?
Reduce serum bile acids and relieve pruritus
