Ascending bacterial infection of the amniotic fluid / membranes / placenta
What is chorioamnionitis?
Infection of the membranes in the uterus.
What are the main presenting features of chorioamnionitis?
Fever
Abdominal pain
Offensive vaginal discharge
Evidence of preterm rupture of membrane
What type of condition is chorioamnionitis?
Potentially life-threatening medical emergency
What is the main risk factor for chorioamnionitis?
Preterm prelabour rupture of membranes
(PPROM)
Why is premature prelabour rupture of the membranes a RF for chorioamnionitis?
Causes the exposure of the normally sterile environment of the uterus to potential pathogens
What is the initial managemnt of chorioamnionitis?
Prompt delivery of the foetus and administration of intravenous antibiotics
