Muscles: Parts of Muscle & Sliding Filament Theory Flashcards
A muscle consists of many _
Muscle Fibres
Muscle Fibres consists of many _
Myofibrils
One Myofibril consists of many connected _
Sarcomeres
The contractile unit Sacrcomere consists of what 2 contractile proteins?
Actin and Myosin
Which protein is bigger? Actin or Myosin?
Myosin
What is the name of the process that describes how sarcomeres contract?
The Sliding Filament Theory
Actin connects to which line?
Z-Line
Myosin connects to which line?
M-Line
What are the head like structures on Myosin that bind to Actin called?
Cross-Bridges
Describe Process of Muscular contraction in terms of Actin and Myosin
- Myosin Cross Bridges attach to Actin
- Mysoin pulls Actin towards it, bringing it closer
- Cross-Bridges dettach
- Process repeats until Actin has been fully pulled in
- Results in a shortened (contracted) sacrcomere
- Many contracted sarcomeres result in a contracted myofibril
- Many contracted myofibrils result in a contracted muscle fibre
- This results in a contracted muscle
What is Muscle Tone?
When protein filaments do not completely dettach, creating tone. Allows muscles to activate quicker and creates a better looking body.
