Momentum - Part I Flashcards
What is distance?
How far something has travelled
Measured in m or km
What is displacement?
The difference between the initial position and final position of an object (has direction applied to it)
Same units as distance with any unit for direction
What is speed? Give formula.
The rate at which something is travelling. S = d/t
Speed is distance divided by time
What is velocity? Give formula.
The speed of something in a given direction. V = d/t
Velocity is displacement over time
What is Momentum?
The amount of motion that an object has.
What is momentum formula and what are units?
P = M x V
Momentum = Mass x Velocity
Measured in kg m/s
How much momentum do stationary objects have?
0 - Velocity is zero
How does an object’s momentum influence its aility to stop?
Objects with greater momentum are harder to stop.
What is motion?
The action of moving or changing place
What is linear motion?
Movement of body where all body parts are moving in same direction at same speed.
What are the two types of linear motion?
- Rectilinear
- Curvilinear
What does rectilinear mean?
All boody parts moving in the same direction at the same speed along a straight line
What does curvilinear mean?
All body parts moving in the same direction at the same speed along a curved line.
What is Angular motion?
Movement of a body part around an axis of rotation.
What is general motion?
Combination of linear and angular motion.
Eg: Running uses hips and shoulders rotate around central axis (angular motion) for us to move in a line at same speed (linear motion)
