Movement skills + Fundamental Skills Flashcards
What are motor skills?
Activities that require voluntary movement to achieve a goal
For movement skills, what are the two catgeories of movement precision?
- Fine motor skills
- Gross motor skills
What is a fine motor skill?
Recruitment of small muscle groups. Emphasis on precision.
What is a gross motor skill?
Recruitment of large muscle groups. More emphasis on power.
For movement skills, what are the 3 categories for types of movement?
- Discrete
- Serial
- Continuous
What are discrete movements?
Have an obvious begining and an end.
Eg: Chest pass
What are serial movements?
Several discrete skills performed in sequence.
Eg: Triple jump, bowling in cricket
What are continuous movements?
No begining or end point.
Eg: Swimming, running, rowing, cycling, etc.
What are the 2 catgeories of movement skills for predictability of environment?
- Open Motor Skills
- Closed Motor Skills
What are the 3 variables that dictate whether a skill is open or closed
- self paced or externally paced
- predictability of environment
- inter trial variability
What does self-paced mean?
Performer has control to determine when to start the movement
What does predictability of the environment refer to?
Wether environmental factors are in control (indoors) or uncontrolled (outdoors).
* Indoors - Predictable environment; no wind, no sun glare, consistent surface.
* Outdoors - Unpredictable environment; wind, rain, sun glare, change in surface.
What does low inter-trial variability mean?
Low:
* Repeats skill in similar way
* No change to performance from training
* Little impact for oponents
* Consistent surface
* Same sized playing area
What does high inter-trial variability mean?
High:
* Order of skills changes
* Change in distance, angles, etc. from one time to next
* Athlete must react and adapt the skills
List the variability factors possesed by closed skills.
- Are self paced
- Predictable environments (indoors)
- Low level inter trial variability
