Muculature of the Anterior Compartment of the Thigh Flashcards
What is the main action of the anterior compartment of the thigh muscles?
- Hip flexors
- Knee Extensors
What are the anterior compartment muscles (5)
- Sartorius
- Pectineus
- Iliopsoas
- Tensor fascia lata
- Quadriceps femorus
Can the psoas minor flex the hip?
No- it does not cross the hip joint
-It inserts on the pectineal line of the pubis
Even though this muscle is anteriorly placed, it is a gluteal region muscle
Tensor fascia lata
The tensor fascia lata ALWAYS works in concert with… (2)
- Iliopsoas
- Rectus femorus
This muscle is thought to be the transitional muscle between the anterior and medial compartments
- often has 2 layers with 2 different innervations
- Has a role in adduction as well as flexing the hip
Pectineus
This muscle forms the main bulk of the anterior thigh
Quadriceps femoris muscle
What are the 4 components of the quadriceps femoris muscle
- Vastus lateralis
- Vastus medialis
- Vastus intermediatus
- Rectus Femoris
What is the main action of the QUAD muscles
Extensors of the knee
What is the common insertion of the QUAD muscles
Quadriceps tendon–> patellar tendon–> tibial tuberosity
What are the 4 different origins of the QUAD muscles
Vastus Lateralis= greater trochanter of the femur
Vastus medialis= intertrochanteric line
Vastus intermedius= shaft of the femur
Rectus Femorus= AIIS
This muscle of the QUAD group crosses the hip joint and aids the iliopsoas muscle in hip flexion
The rectus femoris (bc it attaches at the AIIS)
What innervates the QUADS?
Femoral nerve
