Anterior compartment of the Leg Flashcards
What muscles are included in the anterior compartment of the leg
- Tibialis Anterior
- Extensor digitorum longus
- Extensor hallicus longus
- Fibularis Tertius
What is the main action of the anterior leg muscles
Dorsiflex the ankle
What muscle is the strongest ankle dorsiflexor
Tibialis anterior
What are the attachments for the tibialis anterior?
-The lateral tibia
-Interosseous membrane
-Dorsal aspect of the medial cuniform and the base of the 1st metatarsal
(starts laterally and crosses over to the medial side and goes to the bottom of the foot)
In addition to dorsiflexion, what does the tibialis anterior do?
Inverts the foot
What are the attachments for extensor digitorum longus?
- Lateral condyle of the tibia
- Extensor expansion and the middle and distal phalanges
Although it is attached to the lateral condyle of the tibia, where does the majority of the Extensor digitorum longus run?
Runs on the surface of the fibula and the interosseous membrane
What are the attachments for extensor hallicus longus
-Middle part of the fibula
-Interosseous membrane
-Dorsal aspect to the base of the 1st distal phalynx
(starts on the fibula and runs medially to the top of the foot)
What is the special action of the extensor hallicus longus
Extends the big toe
Where does the extensor hallicus lie?
Between the Tibialis anterior and the extensor digitorum longus
This muscle shares a tendon with the extensor digitorum longus
Fibularis tertius
Where does the fibularis tertius attach?
The dorsal aspect of the base of the 5th metacarpal
What is the action of the fibularis tertius
Evert the foot
-proprioceptive
What is the common innervation for the anterior compartment
Deep Fibular nerve
What is the arteral supply for the anterior compartment
Anterior tibial artery
