Lipid lowering facts Flashcards
primary cause of dyslipidemia
Genetic disorders, mutations in LDLR PCSK9
lipoprotein trends
The more dense they are
1.smaller
2.higher proteins, cholesterol, phospholipids
exogenous transport pathway
fats from food are taken in and synthesized by the liver
endogenous transport pathway
VLDL broken down by lipases in tissues releasing triglycerides and cholesterol
reverse transport pathway
Reabsobtion of cholesterol by recalling HDL-cholesterol
Statins function
inhibit HMG-CoA rate limiting step for cholesterol synthesis. this lowers it which increases LDL receptor recalling LDL and HDL to liver removing them from circulation
PCSK9 action
Targets the PCSK9 protein that usually causes degradation of LDL receptor. inhibition of this lets the receptor be recycled to remove more LDL from the blood stream
