Insulin and diabetes Flashcards
What does insulin do?
Reduces blood glucose level.
What reduces blood glucose level other than insulin?
Removed from blood by cells.
Excercide can also reduce blood glucose level.
What puts glucose into the blood?
Eating carbohydrates.
What are changes in blood glucose concentration monitored and controlled by?
Pancreas.
If blood glucose concentration gets too high, what does pancreas release?
Insulin, which moves glucose into cells and removes it from blood,
What can glucose be stored as?
glycogen in liver and muscle cells,
What is type 1 diabetes?
When pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin.
Means blood glucose level can rise - can be fatal.
They may need injections through day, to make sure glucose is removed from blood.
What is type two diabetes?
How can it be controlled?
What’s its cause?
Resistance to insulin (cells don’t respond properly to it)
Can cause blood sugar level to rise dangerously,
Obesity can increase chances.
Can become controlled by eating a carbohydrate controlled diet and regular exercise.
