The Nervous System - Systems in the Human Body Flashcards
What does the Central Nervous System consist of?
What’s it connected to body by?
- Consists of brain and spinal cord
- Connected to body by sensory and motor neurones
What are the receptors?
Cells that detect stimuli.
Different receptors detect different stimuli.
e.g light receptors in eyes, sound receptors in ears, etc.
What are sensory neuroses?
Carry information as electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS.
What are motor neurones?
Carry electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors.
What are Effectors?
Respond to electrical impulses and bring a change.
Muscles and glands are effectors
respond in different ways - muscles contract and glands release hormones.
What type of centre is the CNS?
co-ordination centre.
Where does the CNS recieve information from? What is response carried out by?
Receives information from the receptors then co-ordinates a response which is carried out by effectors.
What connects neurones?
Synapses
What is the synapse?
How does it response to electrical impulse?
Where two neurons join together.
Electrical impulse is passed from one neurone to the next by chemicals which move across the gap, then the chemicals set off a new electrical impulse in the next neurone.
What are reflexes?
automatic response
What is a reflect arc?
Passage of information in a reflex (receptor to effector)
What do the neurones in reflex arcs go through?
Spinal cord or through unconscious part of brain.
How do you do the ruler drop test to test reaction time?
1) Person being tested resting arm on edge of table.
2) Hold a ruler upright between thumb and forefinger.
3) Let go without giving warning for them to catch, and they should try and catch ruler quickly,
4) Number should be read from top of persons thumb, higher number, slower reaction time.
5) Repeat, calculate mean after eliminating anomalies.
6) Then, change something, e.g add music or give caffeine and see how reaction time changes.
