Cell Transport - Cells In Animals And Plants Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
Happens in solutions and gases.
What is the difference of concentration called? ( diffusion )
Concentration gradient
What temperature gives a higher diffusion rate?
High - gives particles more energy
What cell part lets stuff diffuse in and out of cell?
Cell membrane.
Does a smaller or larger surface area of the cell membrane cause a faster diffusion rate?
Larger
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane (membrane with small holes) from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution.
What is active transport?
Substances being absorbed from an area of low concentration to high.
How do root hair cells in plant do active transport?
Cells stick into soil
Hair gives roots a bigger surface area
Usefu, for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil
Plants need mineral ions for healthy growth.
Why do root hair cells use active transport instead of diffusion?
Concentration is higher in root hair cell, so they cant use it to take in minerals from soil
Active transport allows plant to absorb minerals from a very dilute solution in the soil.
Moves minerals against concentration gradient,
But actuve transport needs energy from respiration to work.
Why do we need active transport to stop us starving?
Body needs to absorb nutrients fron food to survive.
Nutrients have to move from gut into blood
When there is a higher concentration of nutrients in the gut, they diffuse into the blood.
Body uses active transport to move nutrients like glucose.
