Digestive System - Systems in the human body Flashcards
What are large multicellular organisms made up of?
Lots of organ systems.
Cells are the basic building blocks that make up all living organisms.
specialized cells carry out a particular function.
These specialized cells form tissues, which form organs, which form organ systems.
Large multicellular organisms e.g humans have different systems inside them for exchanging and transporting materials.
What do similar cells make up?
Tissues - work together to carry out a function.
What do similar tissue makes up?
Organs - work together to perform a certain function
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water from undigested food, leaving farces
What does the liver do?
Produces Bile
What do the salivary glands do?
Produces digestive juices
What does the stomach do?
Digest food
What does the pancreas do?
Produces digestive juices.
What does the small intestine do?
Digests food and absorbs soluble food molecules, e.g glucose
How does digestive enzymes break down big molecules?
Starch, proteins and fats are big molecules.
They’re too big to pass through the walls of the digestive system.
So digestive enzymes break down theee big molecules into smaller ones.
These smaller, soluble molecules can easily be absorbed into the bloodstream.
What does bile do?
Bile is produced in the liver. Stored in the gall bladder before it’s released into the small intestine.
Bile is alkaline. It neutralizes hydrochloric acid and makes conditions like alkaline.
Enzymes in the small intestine work best in these alkali condition.
Bile also emulsifies fats. Emulsify means that is breaks the fats down into tiny droplets which gives a bigger surface area of fat for lipase to work. This makes digestion faster.
What do carbohydrases do?
Amylase is an example of carbohydrase.
Amylase is made in the salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine.
Works in mouth and small intestine.
What do proteases do?
Proteases are made in the stomach, pancreas and small intestine.
They work in the stomach and small intestine.
What do lipases do?
Lipases are made in the pancreas and small intestine.
They work in the small intestine.
