How do hormones reduce fertility?
Contraceptives can reduce fertility, through hormone contraceptives, e.g oral contraceptives.
What do oral contraceptives do?
Took as pills.
Stop FSH from being released, stopping eggs maturing.
Over 99% effective, but can cause headaches and illness.
What hormonal contraceptives release progesterone?
Whag do they do?
Slows release of progesterone, stopping eggs maturing.
E.g
Contraceptive patch - stuck to skin,
Contraceptive implant - under skin of arm.
Contraceptive injection .
What is an intrauterine device ?
IUD
inserted into uterus, T shaped.
Stops fertilized egg from getting through.
Some types release a hormone .
What is the only type of contraception that prevents STDS?
Condoms - direct barrier.
What is a diaphragm?
Non hormonal.
Shallow plastic cup that fits over entrance of uterus,
Used with spermicide that kills sperm (spermicide can be used on its own as a contraceptive but only about 70-80% effective at preventing pregnancy.)
Other types to avoid pregnancy
Sterilization
women ; cutting or tying fallopian tubes (connected overies to uterus)
men ; cutting or tying sperm ducts
Natural methods
Not having sex when woman is at menstrual stage of getting pregnant.
Abstinence
not having sex.
