A

What do oral contraceptives do?

A

Took as pills.
Stop FSH from being released, stopping eggs maturing.
Over 99% effective, but can cause headaches and illness.

A

Slows release of progesterone, stopping eggs maturing.

E.g
Contraceptive patch - stuck to skin,
Contraceptive implant - under skin of arm.

What is an intrauterine device ?

A

IUD
inserted into uterus, T shaped.
Stops fertilized egg from getting through.
Some types release a hormone .

What is a diaphragm?

A

Non hormonal.
Shallow plastic cup that fits over entrance of uterus,
Used with spermicide that kills sperm (spermicide can be used on its own as a contraceptive but only about 70-80% effective at preventing pregnancy.)
