Air Pollution - Earths Atmosphere Flashcards
What is complete combustion?
When Plenty of oxygen around all of the fuel burns.
What is incomplete combustion?
Not enough oxygen some of fuel doesn’t burn.
What is released during incomplete combustion?
Solid particles ( particulates) of soot (carbon) and unburnt fuel, and carbon monoxide.
What issues can be caused by particulates in atmosphere?
Can get stuck in lungs and cause respiratory problems.
Bad for environment as it reflects sunlight back into space.
Means less light reaches earth - global dimming.
What issues can be caused by carbon monoxide in atmosphere?
Can stop blood from carrying enough oxygen around body.
A Lack of oxygen can lead to death.
Hard to detect.
What does the releasing of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen from combustion create?
Acid rains which damage plants, buildings, statues and metals.
