Human Communicable Diseases - Preventing, Treating And Curing Disease Flashcards
What is bacteria ?
Very small living cells that reproduce rapidly inside your body.
They make you feel ill by producing toxins, which damage cells and tissues.
Explain the bacterial disease salmonella , and how people get it.
Type of bacteria, causes food poisoning
Symptoms; fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.
Caused from toxins in bacteria.
You can get salmonella by;
Eating food that contains salmonella
Eating food that’s been made where bacteria is present
In UK, most poultry is given vaccination to prevent spread of salmonella.
Explain what bacterial disease gonnorhea is and how people get it.
Caused by bacteria
STD
Symptoms; pain when urinating, green or yellow discharge
Some new strains are resistant to penicillin, which is what it used to be treated by,
To prevent spread;
People treated with other antibiotics
Use barrier methods, e,g condoms
What is a virus?
Reproduce rapidly inside body
Live inside cells
Reproduce, and burst cells
Cell damage makes you feel ill.
What is the virus measles and how does one get it?
Viral disease, spread by droplets from infected sneeze or cough,
Symptoms; rash and fever
Can be fatal
Most get vaccinated for it when they’re young.
What is the viral disease HIV and how does someone get it ?
Spread by sexual contact or exchange bodily fluids, e.g blood when sharing needles
Symptoms; begins with flu like symptoms, and then no symptoms for several years usually.
Can be controlled by antiretroviral drugs - stops virus copying,
If not controlled, virus attacks immune cells
If body immune system is damaged, can’t cope with other infections or cancers, at this stage the virus is known as late stage HIV or aids.
What is the virus tobacco mosaic in plants?
Symptoms ; discolorations in leaves, giving mosaic pattern.
Less chlorophyll to absorb light
Means less photosynethis, so plant makes not enough food to grow,
What is rose black spot fungal disease in plants?
Disease caused by fungus
Causes purple or black spots on leaves of rose plants
Leaves can turn yellow and fall off
Means less photosynthesis, so doesn’t grow well
Spread by water or wind
Gardeners kill by using fungicides
Leaves need to be destroyed to prevent spread
How is Malaria caused by a protist?
Malaria is caused by protist, which part of life cycle takes place inside a mosquito. They pick up protist when they feed on an infected animal, and pass it on to animals like humans,
Symptoms; repeating episode of fever, can be fatal
