Biodiversity, human impacts on ecosystems - ecosystem and biodiversity Flashcards
What can deforestation cause?
Less carbon dioxide taking in from atmosphere.
more carbon dioxide released when trees are burnt.
Less biodiversity as it can contain many species of plants and animals, which are killed.
What are peat bogs?
Area of land that are acidic and has waterlogged.
Plants that live in bogs don’t fully decay when they die, and the partially rotted plants build up to form peat.
How can destroying peat bogs cause more CO2 to the atmosphere ?
Carbon in the plant is stored in the peat.
When peat is drained, microorganisms can break it down which release CO2 when they respire.
peat can also be sold as fuel. Co2 is released when peat is burned.
Also reduces biodiversityz
How do breeding programmes protect biodiversity?
endangered species are bred in captivity , so some survive if the species die out in the wild,
They can sometimes then be released into the wild.
How does habitat protection protect ecosystems?
Protecting and rebuilding rare habitats helps to protect species that live there.
How does reintroducing hedgerows and field margins help ecosystems?
hedges and areas at the edge of field provide a habitat for lots of organisms, good for fields with only one plant, as it creates more biodiversity.
How does recycling help ecosystems?
Reduces waste dumped in landfill, and amount of land took over by land fills.
How does government programmes help ecosystems?
Rules to reduce CO2 and deforestation.
What does global warming cause?
flooding
changes in the distribution of species
less biodiversity
changes in migration patterns.
