Meiosis, Cell Differentiation And Mitosis - Cells In Animals And Plants Flashcards
What is meiosis?
Cell division to make sex cells.
What does differentiation mean.?
Process that cells change to become specialised.
What cells are undifferentiated?
Stem cells
Specialised cells - what does sperm cells do?
Tail to help swim to egg
Has alot of mitochondria for energy for swimming
Specialised cells - nerve cells - what do they do?
Long to cover distance in body
Have branches at end to connect to other nerve cells.
Specialised cells - what do muscle cells do?
Long so they hagenspace to contract.
Have lots of mitochondria for energy for contraction.
Specialised cells - what do root hair cells do?
Grow into long hairs that stick into soil.
Absorbs water and minerals from soil.
Specialised cells - what does xylem and phloem cells do?
Phloem cells transport food
Xylem cells transport water
Chromosomes
Nucleus of cell contains chromosomes
These sre coiled up lengths of DNA molecules.
Each chromosome carries a large number of genes,
Different genes control the development of characteristics.
Body cells normally have two copies of each chromosome.
There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in a human cell.
