Hemoglobin Flashcards

1
Q

What are the main differenced between Adult and fetal hemoglobin?

A

Fetal is α2γ2-Adult is α2ß2
HbF has higher affinity for O2 due to less avid binding of 2,3-BPG, allowing HbF to extract O2 from maternal hemoglobin across the placenta.

Q

How does hemoglobin change throughout childhood?

A

HbF remains high until about 2-4 months old. gets progressively more HbA1 (and some small .amount of HbA2 - α2δ2) in first year of life.
○ Ranges: Considered anemia if Hb (g/dL)
■ 3 months: Hb < 10
■ 6 months - 5 years: Hb < 11
■ 6-14 years: Hb < 12 (same amount for adult women)
■ Adult men Hb < 13
