List the effects of Alcohool inn different organs
CNS: Depression due to increased GABA, impairment of cognition/memory/coordination.
■ Overconsumption: respiratory depression, coma, death
■ Hangover effect: mostly from acetaldehyde product. Headache, fatigue,
anxiety, light-sensitivity, etc.
■ Long-term can get Wernicke-Korsakoff from impaired thiamine uptake.
■ Withdrawal: life-threatening. Causes seizure, delirium tremens.
○ Liver: alcoholic fatty liver, (steato)hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatocellular cancer
○ Pancreas: acute and chronic pancreatitis
○ GI: nausea, vomiting, gastritis, esophagitis.
○ Other : Contribution to osteoporosis, anemia, impaired platelet function
○ Fetal alcohol syndrome : Decreased intellectual function, congenital abnormalities, microcephaly, heart and limb defects. Appearance: Smooth filtrum, small palpebral fissures, thin upper lip.
