  1. specifically, the massive bundle of corticofugal nerve fibers passing longitudinally on the ventral surface of the midbrain on each side of the midline; it consists of fibers descending from the cortex to the tegmentum of the brainstem, pontine gray matter, and spinal cord.

either of the two cerebral peduncles, composed of the descending fiber tracts passing from the cerebral cortex to form the longitudinal fascicles of the pons. Also called basis pedunculi cerebri.
