Epithelial Defects and Disease Flashcards
What are Pathologists?
Physicians that study disease processes of diagnosis
What surgical method is used to test disease histology?
Biopsy
What happens in squamous cell carcinoma?
Squamous cells invade into the dermis
What is necrosis?
Tissue degeneration
What are most common cancers in women?
Breast
Lung
Colorectal
What are the most common cancers in male?
Prostate
Lung
Colorectal
What is Dysplasia?
Increase number of cell mitoses in epithelial tissue
Whar can Dysplasia lead to?
Neoplasms
What is Metaplasia?
Tissue adapts to enviromental stimula by cell diffrentiation
Where does Metaplasia most commonly occur?
Epithelial Tissue
What is Neoplasia?
Cells permenantly transforming and proliferating to form neoplasms
What is a Neoplastic Lump?
Tumour
What are 2 Main types of Neoplasms?
Benign
Malignant
What are Malignant Neoplasms?
Cells grow abnormally and invade in surround tissue causing damage and destruction
What is the term used to describe cells detaching to form a secondary tumour?
Metastis
What is the term for when Tumours grow their own blood vessels?
Angiogenesis
What are the 3 differentiations of Malignant tumours?
Well different
Poorly different
Anaplastic
What is well differentiated malignant neoplasm?
Closely resemble tissue of origin
What is Poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm?
Passing resemble of tissue of origin
What is Anaplastic malignant neoplasm?
No resemblance to tissue of origin
What are Benign neoplasms on surface of epithelium called?
Adenomas
What are Malignant tumours on epithelium called?
Carcinomas
What can Dysplasia cause to Smokers?
Cough - dry and chemical effects of smoke paralyse cilia
What can Metaplasia do to smokers?
Eliminates moisturising and cleaning properties
What can Anaplasia cause to smokers?
Lung cancer
What is Atherosclerosis?
Thickening and inelasticity of artery walls
What is Dermatopathology?
Wide range of disease patterns on the skin
What is Non-specific dermatitis? how is it caused?
Eczema and vesicles form in epidermis erupt with yellow fluid, due to fluid accumulation between epidermal cells
What is Chronic dermatitis?
Repeated trauma on skin causing thick opaque scale of surface keratin
What skin layers does Chronic dermatitis effect?
Stratum spinosum and granulosum
