Causes of Infection Flashcards
What are the main agents causing infection?
Bacteria Virus Fungi Parasites Prions
What factors allow infection to occur?
Barriers to infection
Enviroment
Describe structure of a virus?
Small, metabollically inert, too small, have different shapes
What do viruses need for the cells to replicate?
Living host cells
What are the components of a virus?
Cell wall, Core, Sheath, Capsid, Genes
What is a Capsid on a virus?
Protein coat - a shell that stays out out of body
What can some viruses derive from a host cell?
Lipid envelope
What does a Virus contain?
Genetic material but no organelles
What do Virus’s rely on?
Host organelles/systems to reproduce
How do Viruses bind to a cell?
Use surface proteins to insert genetic material inside
What are 3 Common viruses?
Chickenpox virus - lay dormant emerge to cause shingles
Rhinovirus - infect for days cause a cold
Hep C virus- Chronic liver infection over years
How do Viruses differ in the severity of diseases?
Mild - herpes
Variable - flu
Severe - Ebola
Describe structure of bacteria?
Prokaryote
Unicellular
Cell membrane, cell wall, no nucleus, asexual, move using flaggells
What genetic material would be in bacteria?
DNA but no membrane
What are the 3 shape classifications of bacteria?
Coccus - circle
Spirillum - spiral
Bacillus - rod
What are the 3 cell wall stain classifications?
Gram positive
Gram negative
Others i.e myobacteria
Describe Gram negative?
Lipopolysaccharide and protein on outer chell , stains pink
Describe Gram positive?
Simple membrane and peptidoglycan - stains purple
What does the type of cell wall in bacteria determine?
Structural strength of cell and how well it can survive in the enviroment
What is the format of the names of bacteria?
Family then type, always in italics, Family first letter always capital second type always lowercase
What are 4 examples of bacterial diseases?
Meningoccocal sepsis (blood)
Bacterial endocarditis
Cellulitis
Streptococcal throat infection
Describe Fungi?
Eukaryotes, similiar characteristics to human cells reproduce asexual and sexually
What are 3 types of fungi?
Yeasts - candida albicans
Moulds - aspergillus fumigatus
Diamorphic fungi - switch between types
Give examples of Mild fungal infections?
Thrus, athletes foot, ringworm
