Surgery
SITS
When to decrease insulin?
Physical activity
Impaired renal function
Intercurrent illness
Reduced food intake
Endocrine disorders (Addison, coelicac, thyroid disorders)
Why is insulin not given orally?
It is a protein so it will denature if give orally
Which area of the body when injecting insulin would be fast absorption rate?
Abdomen
Which area of the body when injecting insulin would be slow absorption rate?
Buttocks / outer thighs
What can occur if repeating injecting in same area and how would you avoid it?
Lipohypertrophy - rotate sites as can cause erratic absorption of insulin
Soluble insulin examples?
Human/porcine / bovine
When to inject soluble insulin?
15-30 mins before meals
Soluble insulin onset time?
30 to 60 minutes
Soluble insulin Peak action?
1-4 hours
